What is the Chartered Professional Engineers Council (CPEC) ?

The Chartered Professional Engineers Council is a statutory body established under the  Chartered Professional Engineers Act 2002, and came into force on 1 July 2002

In undertaking its statutory duties The Council:

reviews and approves the Registration Authority's (The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand Inc. - IPENZ's) rules containing standards that cover minimum standards of initial and ongoing competence plus ethical conduct

considers appeals by engineers against the Registration Authority (IPENZ) decisions,  including decisions not to place them on the new Register, and on disciplinary matters. There are several thousand engineers registered under the old Act by the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) who applied to be placed on the new Register during calendar year 2003, or who are likely to apply in 2004/5, and

reviews and reports to the Minister on the performance of the Registration Authority (IPENZ) and The Chartered Professional Engineers Council (CPEC) in exercising their respective functions and powers under the Act

This Act replaces the 1924 Engineers Registration Act and  its purpose is to create a quality-mark, (CPEng), for competent professional engineers and place their names on a public register

The CPEng Act seeks to inform the purchaser of engineering services as to whom the profession sees as competent practitioners by allowing them use of the title Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)

The Chartered Accountants Act provides a similar regime for accountants. This has found widespread public and professional acceptance

What does CPEng mean?

CPEng, (Chartered Professional Engineer), is a Government-backed mark of quality indicating the individual engineer has proven their current competence to practice as a professional engineer within New Zealand

These engineers are required to maintain their current competence.  They are likely to belong to one, or more professional bodies. A CPEng will be in regular communication  with their profession - both locally and overseas engaged in a process of ongoing professional development and contributing to the development and sharing of new engineering knowledge for the benefit of all

Members of the public need to be aware that not all those working as engineers are registered as Chartered Professional Engineers, (CPEng)
